The car was given a complete, down to the tub, restoration in 2005 in preparation for the 2006 season. There is full documentation with this 962, including photo journal, receipts and certificates to support this claim. During the restoration the major highlights included a full crack checking of all critical components, including suspension, with full certification from an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approved NDT facility. The fuel cell, which had been replaced with a new cell several years earlier, was removed, repaired where necessary and re-certified.
New components were installed into the transmission including an LSD, clutch, input shaft and output shafts. Also installed in the car at this time was a new engine, 3.0 liters from Porsche Motorsports North America. This was not a rebuilt engine, but was built from new parts. Additional items were either replaced and/or rebuilt and a full list of these items can be supplied.
During the 2006 season the car ran several times in HSR historic events and finished the season 3rd overall in the Group C championship and 1st in class. The car was primarily driven by the owner and another gentleman driver and was never off or damaged.
One notable event was the season finale where the car was driven in a 3 hour race by the owner and Derek Bell and Jurgen Barth. There is full documentation including photos and time sheets to document this race.
During the 2006 season every time the car was on track, whether for testing, practice or race, all time was documented and logged on the car. After every outing the car was given a full service, including disassembly of the gearbox, compression test of the engine and oil samples sent to Porsche Motorsports N.A. for examination.
Absolutely no expense has been spared on this car at any time. The car was gone over again at the end of the 2006 season with paint work, transmission, new clutch and all suspension parts removed, crack checked and re-fitted to the car. The car has not run at all during the 2007 season and is currently registered for the Porsche Rennsport Reunion III in Daytona Beach Florida November 1 through 4. We will be showing the car and possibly racing it during this event.
The car has a 2006 HSR log book and would need a current inspection to be eligible for running in current HSR events, but certification should not be an issue. The car has also been registered with ACCUS for a Historical Technical Passport for running in European events. All the photos and inspections have been completed for this ACCUS certification.
The car is also eligible for use in the 2008 Le Mans Reunion, which will feature Group C cars.
The car also comes with an impressive spares package, but one item of interest is another new Porsche Motorsports N.A. 3.0-liter engine. This engine was built up for the owner by Porsche Motorsports N.A. from new parts and has never been fitted into a car at any time. It is secured in a shipping container and is manually turned over once a month to ensure no long term pressure is put on any of the valve train. This engine is completely new and is ready to install. Take the headers and turbo chargers off of the engine in the car and fit them to the new engine and you are ready to go.
When the original new engine was installed into the car prior to the 2006 season, new headers and turbo chargers were also supplied and the Bosch Motronic 1.3 system was rebuilt and upgraded. Both engines have electronic throttle control that is calibrated into the upgraded Bosch management system. This was not available on the car originally, but Porsche Motorsports provides it now to make the car more responsive and easier to drive.
As you can tell this is a 962 that is certainly head and shoulders above most offered for sale today. Any and all certifications, documentation and/or pictures can be provided by ourselves. The car has been restored and maintained by Metro Racing Systems in Stuart, Florida, which has an outstanding reputation with historic cars and can be vouched for by Porsche Motorsports who regularly contracts with them to perform restoration work.
*Price: $775,000, to include the new spare engine and some spares such as sets of wheels, gear ratios.
