Driven by Mark Donohue and George Follmer, it was raced in the 1973 Daytona 24 Hours and dueled mightily with the eventual winner, the “other” works RSR of Peter Gregg/Hurley Haywood until halfway through the night, when the Penske car blew a piston and was retired. Race number 6.

It was then sold to Al Holbert (he used to work for the Penske team in 1967-8), who used it to take 2nd place in the 1973 Trans-Am Championship. Car carried Holbert’s race no: 14.
1973:
03/2-04/2: Daytona 24-Hours: Donohue/Follmer, #6; DNF. (Engine.)
During 1973, the RSR achieved four top three podium finishes, enough to ensure that Al Holbert was in line for an even faster RSR in 1974. During the Edmonton race in August, Holbert’s co-driver, Milt Minter crashed the RSR and it was taken back to the Holbert Porsche-Audi dealership and stripped of parts (we have the photos). In 2008, Larry Holbert, Al’s son, sold the rights and some small parts through me to a restorer, who is currently rebuilding the car to it’s original, Daytona specification.
